COVID-19 and the Eclipse Foundation
We hope members of our community are continuing to stay safe and healthy as we face unique challenges related to COVID-19. The Foundation staff is fortunate to be able to work remotely, so we can continue to support our community through this difficult time. We are working to carry out all our regular activities in support of our broad community as we continue to connect and work virtually.
Community Engagement & Sustainability
During COVID-19
As we’ve all seen, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact on the world, pervading all aspects of our lives, personal and professional. The Eclipse community is no different. COVID-19 is hitting us hard - impacting our committers, contributors, and our community as whole. During these tough times, most companies have their employees working remotely, which means that almost everybody is now a remote worker and is more eager than ever to find ways to connect.
What does it mean for our community?
This is a great opportunity to improve how we connect as a community and how we collaborate virtually. Of course, mailing lists, wikis, and other public and archived means of communication will continue to be the default and preference, as they are key to transparency. But we invite you to take the opportunity to boost the online activities of your project or community of projects. There are few ways you can do this:
Consider having an office hour session with committers.
Schedule “ask me anything” sessions.
Book a town hall meeting.
Plan a virtual democamp or an online meetup.
Set up a public meeting for your Eclipse top level project.
Our Foundation staff are committed to helping community members communicate and collaborate effectively on driving the success and adoption of Eclipse projects and technologies.
If you are hosting an online event, we would be happy to share the details through this newsletter or through our social media channels. Just send an email with the event details to events@eclipse.org.
More broadly, if you have any community-relevant content, news, and announcements, please contact us at news@eclipse.org and we can share and promote your updates via our channels.
EclipseCon 2020 Update
We’re Going Virtual
In late March, we announced that EclipseCon 2020, scheduled for the week of October 19, will be a virtual event. This early decision allows us to plan how to share, learn, and connect in the best EclipseCon tradition, but do it virtually. Read the full announcement here. More information will follow in the coming weeks.
Call For Proposals
Submissions open April 15 and close June 15. Visit the CFP page to learn more and submit your proposal.
The Jakarta EE Working Group has launched the Jakarta EE Developer Survey for 2020. Three years running strong, this is the enterprise Java ecosystem’s leading survey with thousands of developers sharing their insights from around the globe. The results of the 2020 survey will give platform vendors, enterprises, and individual developers in the enterprise Java ecosystem updated information about how the cloud native world for enterprise Java is unfolding and provide valuable insight relative to their strategies and businesses.
Please take a few minutes to take the survey to add your voice, and help the industry gain the broadest possible view of the state of cloud native technologies in the context of enterprise Java.
Also, please encourage others to take the survey as well by promoting the survey through your respective social channels.
You can take the survey here. Survey responses will be collected until April 30, 2020 and the results will be published in June. For those who are curious, previous years’ survey results are available here.
OpenHW Group and the Eclipse Foundation
Among the new members listed below, we are pleased to welcome 29 new members this month that join as a result of the relationship forged between OpenHW Group and the Eclipse Foundation.
The OpenHW Group, a new member-based, not-for-profit organization, fosters collaboration among global hardware and software designers in the development of open source cores, related IP, tools, and software.
OpenHW Group and the Eclipse Foundation have agreed that OpenHW Group’s projects will leverage the Eclipse Foundation’s processes, infrastructure, and policies wherever possible, and, in general, share member benefits wherever possible. To facilitate this, all OpenHW Group Silver, Gold, and Platinum members are also Solutions members of the Eclipse Foundation.
This relationship is expected to yield many benefits to our joint communities. Welcome!
